Citizenship 
Requirements

  • Any Tsalagi (Cherokee) descendant of the original Tsalagi who migrated to Spanish Tejas and Nacogdoches in August of 1807 and were approved for settlement by Nemesio Salcedo, Commandant General of Spain’s Internal Provinces on September 4,1807 are eligible for Tsalagiyi Nvdagi Tribal Citizenship.
  • Any Tsalagi descendant of Chief Bowles migration party of 1819-1820 are eligible for Tsalagiyi Nvdagi Tribal Citizenship.
  • Any Tsalagi descendant of migrating Tsalagi to Texas after 1820 are eligible for Tsalagiyi Nvdagi Tribal Citizenship.
  • The Tsalagiyi Nvdagi Tribe Constitution, Governing Act No. 1 states: Any person of Ani-Tsalagi heritage, at any age is eligible for full Citizenship, no matter where they reside. This Governing Act is in response to systematic discrimination by the United States Government and Federally Recognized Cherokee Bands/Tribes. Enacted by the Governing Council of the Tsalagiyi Nvdagi Tribe on the 20th day of October, 2012.
  • Tsalagiyi Nvdagi Tribe Constitution, Governing Act No. 13 provides Citizenship eligibility to all Nottoway Old Cheraw descendants provided they follow the same Citizenship Application procedures as eligible Tsalagi descendants. Enacted by the Governing Council of the Tsalagiyi Nvdagi Tribe on the 17th day of April, 2021.
  • Any descendant or Citizen of Nacion Cherokee de Mexico or Tribu Cherokee Nacional de Mexico living in the Republic of Mexico or elsewhere are eligible for duel Citizenship with the Tsalagiyi Nvdagi Tribe.
  • A separate Tribal Citizenship Application must be filled out for each prospective Tribal Citizen. If you have children at home, you will need to fill out a form for each child. Please sign the forms for them if they are under 18 years of age.
  • Tribal affidavits must be filled out completely, signed and notarized for each individual Citizenship Application. An Elder member of that family or a parent can submit one signed and notarized Tribal Affidavit for the entire family. Please indicate this when sending applications in to District Chiefs or Tribal Headquarters.
  • Any proof of Tsalagi or Nottoway Old Cheraw ancestry (copies of family trees, genealogy records, Tribal census rolls, family oral traditions, etc.) must be included with your Citizenship Application. The burden of proof is upon each Prospective Tribal Citizen. If anyone in your family is currently an enrolled citizen of the Tribe, please indicate their name and roll number in the space provided on the form.
